Since the beginning of the 20th century, via blues, dixie, swing, bebop, rubbing shoulders with the crossover of European classical music, and finally in the dialog of free improvisation, it remains a living fascination. The much sought-after New York bassist Marty Isenberg has created an autobiographical jazz drama with “The Way I Feel Inside.” Inspired by the retrospective nature of Wes Anderson films and his selection of music from the 60s and 70s, Isenberg combined songs by Eliot Smith, Nick Drake, David Bowie, the Zombies, and the Kinks with newly arranged improvisations. The album, released in 2023, was highly praised by leading music critics, and streams are in the hundreds of thousands.

On stage, Marty Isenberg invites the audience to share the dramaturgically designed music symbolizing loss, change, uncertainty, reorientation, and fearlessness.

In a dialogue between the moderation and the music, Marty Isenberg on bass, vocalist Sami Stevens, Rodrogo Recabarren on drums, and Alicyn Yaffee on guitar lead the audience through 90 minutes of entertaining program, highs and lows, ending in an encouraging liberation.

Dr. Marty Isenberg’s career as a jazz musician began at the age of 12, after losing his father to cancer the year prior. A skilled amateur musician, Marty’s father kept many instruments around the house that he would play for the family. After his death, Marty would pull one of these instruments off the wall and begin teaching himself how to play by reading tablature in Bass Player Magazine. Playing bass was love at first pluck for Mr. Isenberg. It was a cathartic healing experience, a way to stay connected to his father, and a way to creatively express himself.

He went on to study at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he majored in Jazz Performance and minored in Jazz Composition. He received his Master of Music degree from New York University, and later completed his doctorate at Stony Brook University.

For almost 20 years, Mr. Isenberg has been part of the rich New York City music scene. His performing career weaves through many styles of music, from jazz to classical music to theater and contemporary music. Mr. Isenberg pulls from all of these experiences to arrange the music of his debut album, The Way I Feel Inside: Inspired by the Films of Wes Anderson, adding his own voice and reimagining the music that helped to shape his own musical identity.

He is an endorsing artist for Aguilar Amps, DR Strings, Fender Guitars, and Radial Engineering. He has performed for Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Kiss Me Kate, The Lion King, A Beautiful Noise, and Fun Home on Broadway. Furthermore, he has toured internationally with the Dave Juarez Trio and Soul Doctor the musical, and he is the cofounder and CEO of the Clinton Hill Music School in Brooklyn.

Marty Isenbergs Karriere als Jazzmusiker begann im Alter von 12 Jahren, nachdem er im Jahr zuvor seinen Vater durch Krebs verloren hatte. Martys Vater war ein begabter Amateurmusiker und hatte viele Instrumente zu Hause, auf denen er für die Familie spielte. Nach seinem Tod nahm Marty eines dieser Instrumente von der Wand und brachte sich selbst das Spielen bei, indem er die Tabulaturen im Bass Player Magazine las. Das Bassspielen war für Marty Isenberg Liebe auf den ersten Ton.

Von Amsterdam über Budapest und Berlin, London, Lissabon, und New York füllt der gebürtige Ungar Lörinc Barabas Konzerthallen als Solist und Bandleader. Seine Konzerte spiegeln die Wechselwirkungen des Lebens, berühren, schaffen Momente der Stille und der Begeisterung. Barabas ist wie ein Kraftwerk voller Musik, das für jeden etwas bereithält.

Lörinc Barabas, der in einem musikalischen Haushalt aufwuchs, bekam mit 11 Jahren von seiner Mutter einen Synthesizer geschenkt, nachdem er einem Lehrer aufgefallen war. Schon bald ging er zur Musikschule, wo er seine Leidenschaft für die Trompete als sein Instrument entdeckte, dass er autonom einarmig spielen konnte.

Er studierte Jazztrompete und hatte schon früh ein eigenes Ensemble. Über 20 Jahre prägt er die ungarische Jazzszene entscheidend mit. Neben seinen Solokonzerten kreierte er ein Jazz-Quartett, eine Fusion-Band und RANDOM ein spezielles Jam-Format.

Seine Diskografie mit zwölf Plattenproduktionen liest sich eindrucksvoll. Sein nächstes Album mit dem verheißungsvollen Titel ORBIT lädt die Hörenden zu einer Begegnung in den Kosmos der Umlaufbahnen musikalischer Satelliten ein. „The Trumpet shall sound.“

Lörinc Barabas, who grew up in a musical household, was given a synthesizer by his mother at the age of 11, after which he caught the attention of a teacher. He soon went to music school, where he discovered his passion for the trumpet as an instrument he could play autonomously with one arm.

From then on, the spell was broken, and Barabas explored the world of jazz and pop.

He studied jazz trumpet and had his own ensemble at an early age. For over 20 years, he has had a decisive influence on the Hungarian jazz scene. In addition to his solo concerts, he created a jazz quartet, a fusion band, and RANDOM, a special jam format.

He has made several guest appearances in Germany, including at the Xjazz Festival in Berlin.

Eleanna Pitsikaki entdeckte schon früh ihre Leidenschaft für den Qanun, die sie seither lebt, atmet und mit der sie forscht und komponiert.

Sie hat sich als eine außergewöhnliche Musikerin etabliert, die in atemberaubendem Tempo durch die Hochschulen eilt, selbst an der Musikhochschule Mainz unterrichtet hat und nun dort promoviert. Ihre Arbeit geht über das Musizieren hinaus: Sie engagiert sich in transkulturellen Netzwerken und forscht zu den tiefen sozialen und kulturellen Bedeutungen von Musik – speziell des Jazz, den sie mit ihrem Qanun in neue Welten führt.

Aufgewachsen in Kreta, „wo Sonne und Meer Legenden gebären“, fand Eleanna ihre wahre Liebe zu einem Instrument, das weder zu den Weißen Bergen noch zu den kretischen Festen gehört. Früh verband sie die Klänge der byzantinischen Musik mit den Wegen des osmanischen Maqam, bevor sie sich der Welt der Jazz-Improvisation widmete. Ihr Genre, das sie selbst als „transkulturellen Jazz“ bezeichnet, ist ein kreatives Zusammenspiel von Tradition und Moderne.

In ihrem Debütalbum „Aroma“, das bei TIMEZONE RECORDS erschien, bringt Eleanna Pitsikaki diese vielfältigen Einflüsse zu einem warmen, emotionalen Erlebnis. Dieses Album ist eine Hommage an die Fusion von Jazz, mediterranen Klängen und experimenteller Freiheit – eine Reise durch Erinnerungen, Identität und Gefühl, die die Essenz der Künstlerin widerspiegelt: authentisch, tief und leidenschaftlich. Kritiker:innen bezeichnen Eleanna Pitsikaki als die „Neuentdeckung“ im Jazz, der es mit ihrer Band gelingt, den Eindruck zu erwecken, als habe der Qanun von jeher seinen Platz im Jazz.

Das Quintett SAMEKA trifft den 1970er-Fusion-Sound des Jazz-Rock und klingt gleichzeitig ganz heutig. In fragilen transparenten Passagen wirken SAMEKA wie die „Dekonstruktion einer historischen westlichen Epoche“, bis orientalische Rhythmen mit Gast-OUD-Spieler Hesham Hamra das Geschehen in Richtung Weltmusik hinüberschweben lassen.

Bassist Simon Zauels gründete die Band 2019. Im Jahr 2021 erhielt die Band ein Stipendium, mit dessen Hilfe sie ihr erstes Album voller Eigenkompositionen für Mons Records aufnahm. „Großen Respekt vor der Tradition und zugleich hochgradige Originalität“ bescheinigte „Jazz in Europe“ diesem Debüt. Als Finalisten des Future Sounds Contests traten Sameka im Herbst 2022 bei den Leverkusener Jazztagen auf. Am 14. Juli 2023 konzertierten SAMEKA auf dem berühmten Jazzopen Festival in Stuttgart. International ging das Quintett im März 2023 auf erste große Tournee, die sie nach Taiwan führte, um ihre Musik mit einem neuen Publikum zu teilen.

2024 veröffentlichten SAMEKA mit MERLINS REISE ihr zweites Album bei TIME ZONE RECORDS. MERLINS REISE beinhaltet SAMEKA mit einem Streichquartett und erneutem Feature von OUD-Spieler Hesham Hamra. Aufgrund der hohen Resonanz des Taiwan Debuts folgte im März 2024 eine weitere Taiwan-Tournee mit dort ansässigem Streichquartett, die wiederum zu einer Einladung 2025 führte. Das Album selbst wird u. a. als „Zauberei der Klang-Fusionäre“ von Peter Michael Bitz bezeichnet und Jazz Fun beschreibt ein „stilistisches Kaleidoskop, das den Gesetzen der modernen Jazzfusion unterliegt und viel Raum für Improvisation und sehr interessante Arrangements lässt.“

The quintet SAMEKA captures the 1970s fusion sound of jazz-rock and at the same time sounds completely contemporary. In fragile, transparent passages, Sameka seems like the deconstruction of a historical Western era, until oriental rhythms with guest OUD player Hesham Hamra allow the action to float over towards world music.

Bassist Simon Zauels founded the band in 2019. In 2021, the band received a grant to help them record their first album of original compositions for Mons Records. “Great respect for tradition and at the same time a high degree of originality” is what “Jazz in Europe” this debut. As a finalist in the Future Sounds Contest, Sameka performed at the Leverkusen Jazz Days in the fall of 2022. On July 14, 2023, SAMEKA gave a concert at the famous Jazzopen Festival in Stuttgart. Internationally, the quintet went on their first major tour in March 2023, which took them to Taiwan to share their music with a new audience.

In 2024, SAMEKA released their second album, MERLINS REISE, on TIME ZONE RECORDS. MERLINS REISE features SAMEKA with a string quartet and the return of OUD player Hesham Hamra. Due to the great response to the Taiwan debut, another Taiwan tour with a string quartet based there followed in March 2024, which in turn led to an invitation in 2025. The album itself is described as“Magic of sound fusionaries” by Peter Michael Bitz and Jazz Fun describes a ”stylistic kaleidoscope that is subject to the laws of modern jazz fusion and leaves plenty of room for improvisation and very interesting arrangements…”

The flutist moves fluidly across the boundaries of jazz, rock, classical, and world music. After Flowing Mind (GLM), the successful album of her formation, the Isabelle Bodenseh Quartet, this exceptional musician of the jazz scene has a surprise in store—one that will reveal her full artistic spectrum. Even her résumé shows how Isabelle Bodenseh draws on her extensive and profound musical knowledge in diverse ways.

Isabelle Bodenseh loves and lives music.

From an early age, the half-French musician realized that a classical music degree with the goal of becoming an orchestral musician was not enough for her. The freedom she sought was neither found in classical music nor in the role of an orchestra player. She found it in jazz and improvised music. After setting aside her orchestral studies and pursuing a degree in music education in Frankfurt in the early 1990s, Isabelle Bodenseh continued the path of free music, studying with jazz flutist and composer James Newton in Los Angeles.

After half a year of studies in the homeland of jazz, she moved on to Cuba. In Havana, with the help of a one-year DAAD scholarship, she not only learned Latin flute from the most renowned Cuban musicians but also studied composition with Andrés Alén and toured with Cuban bands. Since then, Isabelle Bodenseh has incorporated her global musical expertise into numerous projects. She has performed in ensembles such as Chantal, Verquer, Son Aché, La Serena, and Sisters in Jazz International, as well as working as a theater and studio musician on over 30 CD productions, including playalongs for the renowned Schott music publishing house.

In 2016, alongside her role as an improvisation lecturer at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts—where she has been teaching since 2000—she founded the Jazz à la Flute platform to bring the flute further into the jazz spotlight. This initiative not only led to the creation of an improvisation academy but also to her heartfelt project: a duo with guitarist Lorenzo Petrocca. She expanded the flute family beyond the standard concert flute to include the alto and the particularly intriguing bass flute.

The Isabelle Bodenseh Quartet, founded in 2018, featuring flute, guitar, Hammond organ, and drums, evokes the sound of 1960s recordings with guitarist George Benson and flutist Joe Farrell.

Bodenseh’s band—featuring Lorenzo Petrocca on guitar, Thomas Bauser on Hammond organ, and Lars Binder on drums—forms a swinging rhythm section over which the flute can fully unfold and take soaring solo flights. Alongside radiant melodic passages, the funky and percussive aspects are not neglected. Tours have already taken the lively flutist and her band across Europe. The new, now fifth album, with her lyrical flute voice, will also be presented live.
